Teachers have been working one on one with students assessing foundational reading skills over the last few weeks of school. These assessments reveal needs for intervention or enrichment in a variety of areas. Because of the nature of the assessments, teachers are able to be diagnostic and target their intervention to meet specific needs in reading. Our teachers have been receiving extensive training in the implementation of the science of reading and are more equipped to serve students than ever before. Our expectations for students’ reading capabilities are high as we approach their learning using evidence-based practices that focus on phonological awareness, predictable spelling patterns and phonics skills, text comprehension and vocabulary acquisition strategies.
